Rethinking Buy Local

“Buy Local” is not a new phrase, but in this economy, it has new meaning. Lots of businesses could go under unless something suddenly changes for the better, a turn-around no one is predicting. Do we want those locked doors to be on the streets of the Pioneer Valley? Do we want to lose restaurants, stores, jobs and the many service providers who call us by name and bend over backward to help us out?

What if energy prices explode and products from afar begin to flaunt prices that reflect the miles they and their components have traveled? What if national infrastructure problems inhibit the delivery of goods? What if war or pestilence makes products unavailable or unsafe? How dependent do you want to be on so many things far beyond your control?

I’m not suggesting isolationism or paranoia, just some efforts to keep the local economy strong so we can maintain the vibrancy, options, and jobs that make this area a great place to live and work.

Nor am I suggesting you pay more for less value. I don’t believe in rewarding inept businesses, whether local or on the moon.

The Valley is filled with amazing people and excellent businesses offering great value at competitive prices.

  • If you have local favorites, now would be a great time to help ensure they survive by remaining loyal and frequent customers.
  • If you are in the habit of buying online or from large chains, now would be a good time to check around and consider giving someone else’s local favorite an opportunity to win your loyalty.

Buy local and support your community and the businesses you want active throughout and after the recession. Every purchase is a vote of confidence and an act of support.
